History
The Hotel Meira, now a 3-star classified hotel, was founded way back in 1945 by Simão Meira and Felisbela Garcia Gomes Brito, both born and married in Vila Praia de Âncora. Simão was Working in commerce, Whilst Felisbela was the daughter of Abel do Nascimento Brito and Delfina Graça, owners of the Pension Âncora, situated on the same site upon wich the present Hotel Meira now stands. They decided, as the Pensão Meira was the only establishment of its kind, and in view of an increased demand, that the enlargement of the premises was a priority. Abel, now windowed, agreed and, with the addition of one more floor and the subsequent increase of the number of rooms, the Pensão Meira was born. Before long, the Pensão was recognised as the nest in the North, although whilst all rooms had hot and cold water, very few had a toilet. The culinary prowess of Felisbela was quickly realized.
Simão Meira Died in 1962, leaving 3 sons. The oldest, Jorge, decided to remain in the family business, and is still the proprietor today. The other two chose other vacations. Felisbela, is still alive today at 92 years of age.
Despite gradual updating of the propriety, and ambitious reconstruction of the hotel took place in 1995 when the remodelled 3-star Hotel Meira opened its doors again, to confirm its claim throughout Portugal as a quality hotel, at the same time maintaining its reputation as having one of the finest restaurants, both nationally and internationally.
I would like to acknowledge and thank all those who have contributed in whatever way over the years, to ensure that the Hotel Meira retains the good name that it has earned since those very early days.
